Fans of the original Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo which was released in 1996 and was an incredibly popular arcade game that borrowed both the characters and the music from the super popular Street Fighter series and Darkstalkers games, may be pleased to hear that very soon Capcom are releasing a new version for mobile devices. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo was undoubtedly a success in its day as in 2007 an updated version entitled Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix was released, initially as a Playstation exclusive in the U.S. but eventually on both Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix featured a variety of changes from the 1996 original including updated characters with reworked gem drop patterns, and added visual effects, as well as the removal of some exploitative glitches that some unscrupulous players could use to ensure a victory every time.
Not all of the changes were positive though and there were some which drew criticism to the game such as the removal of the tutorial, and its replacement with a text based instruction guide, the removal of the popular Street Puzzle mode and most of the bonus content that completion of it would unlock, and the numerous "win taunts" which players were mocked with upon losing a match were removed leaving a measly one taunt per character.
Despite these minor foibles Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix was a definite crowd-pleaser hence Capcom's decision to release a new version for mobile devices. But could this game ever surpass the popularity that the original puzzle fighter had all those years ago?
The new Puzzle Fighter will feature an impressive roster of legendary characters and stages from throughout popular Capcom franchises. Fan-favorites such as Ryu, Ken or Chun-Li of Street Fighter fame, X the protagonist of the famous Mega Man series, Morrigan from Darkstalkers, and the loveable Frank West from Dead Rising, all these and more are set come to life with all new voiceovers and cinematic special moves. The new mobile version was built from the ground up by Capcom Vancouver, and looks set to introduce a whole new generation to the non-stop action that many will know and love from the original Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo days. Players start the game by selecting a miniturized version of their favourite Capcom character, and then have the choice of two additional supplementary characters to enhance the skills of their main character, before fighting your way through battles laced with tactics and strategy against players all around the world!
While it is obvious to say that graphically it will demolish the charming pixels of 1996's Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo II, and the inclusion of real time online PVP action on mobile devices, with all the fun of head-to-head battles on the go. This may irk the die hard fans of the original but Puzzle Fighter does indeed look set to steal Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo II's crown and establish its self as THE champion of Capcom's puzzle fighter series.
