There Is A Men In Black Revival
This might come as a surprise to some people, but it is interesting to note that the Men in Black franchise will be making a return to the movie screen. However, the return won't be a continuation of the previous movies. Instead, the new movie will be starring new characters while still being set in the same setting.
As a result, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones won't be starring as their characters Agent J and Agent K, though the chances of a cameo seem rather high. Instead, the new movie will be starring Chris Hemsworth and Tess Thompson, who will be agents of the same organization as their predecessors. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that Liam Neeson has been cast as a character named High-T, who will be heading up the London branch of the MIB where Hemsworth's character starts out. It remains to be seen what kind of character High-T will prove to be, but should he possess something of Neeson's usual gruffness, he could make for a rather amusing straight man for superior contrast with the standard zaniness of the Men in Black movies for a movie or two.
Why Is There A Men In Black Revival?
With that said, some people might be wondering why there will be a revival of the Men in Black franchise at all. Considering the numbers brought in by the previous movies, Sony's interest in the franchise is clear, particularly since it has continued to show signs of said interest over time. After all, the third movie in the Men in Black franchise was released a full decade after its immediate predecessor, while a potential crossover with the Jump Street franchise was mulled over a while ago. Combined with the fact that movie studios tend to be rather risk-averse, it is no wonder that Sony has made the choice to bring Men in Black back to the movie screen.
However, the new Men in Black movie is riskier than most revivals in recent times. For example, the stars of the previous movies won't be having huge roles in it, meaning that it can't count on the fans of those actors as well as those characters. Furthermore, this isn't a reboot in the strictest sense of that word, meaning that it can't count on fans flocking to a new interpretation of a familiar narrative. As a result, it can be said that the new Men in Black movie is somewhat braver than most of its counterparts, though it remains to be seen whether that bravery will pay off in the long run.
As for the question of, "Is it needed?" Well, suffice to say that can be rather complicated in nature, not least because there is a wide range of people out there with a wide range of opinions on the matter. Strictly speaking, it can be argued that a follow-up to the previous movies is not needed because those movies managed to tie up their storyline. However, this movie isn't a simple and straightforward follow-up but rather something new happening in a familiar playground, meaning that it will be stepping on fewer toes than a lot of the other revivals out there. As a result, while the new Men in Black movie might not be needed, it will be interesting to see whether it will be good enough to launch a new series of movies with Hemsworth and Thompson as the stars.
